Zeus, king of the Olympian gods, decided to punish him by making Sisyphus endlessly push a giant boulder up a hill. When Sisyphus failed to return to the Underworld, he was dragged back by Hermes. An infuriated Hades sent Sisyphus back to earth to fix things, which of course, Sisyphus did not do. However, Sisyphus once again outsmarted Thanatos, as he had informed his wife not to perform the customary funerary rites. Ares freed Thanatos and then turned Sisyphus over to him. Since Thanatos was trapped, nobody on earth could die this especially angered Ares, the god of war, as his battles had lost their fun since nobody could die, and he decided to intervene. He is often painted as a large, winged figure wearing battle gear and with piercing eyes. Greek vase paintings and funeral steles began to portray him as being a kindly and resolute escort, and his image is one of peace and rest. This changing mindset resulted in the depiction of Thanatos being shifted from an older man, intent on carrying souls of the departed to the Underworld, to a youthful figure who is less terrible. After the 4th century BCE, the Greeks regarded death as a part of life, the natural end of living. Thanatos is portrayed as a figure who can not be escaped from. On white Athenian lekythio, he is often depicted as an older man beside a youthful Hypnos – an effective way of showing that Death was nothing but a prolonged sleep and an older brother to Hypnos. Obviously his math is fuzzy and some of his ideas I don't agree with, but the basis premise of getting rid of your debt makes more sense now than ever.Thanatos is depicted in a number of different ways during the late 6th and early 5th century BCE, Thanatos and Hypnos are portrayed in Attic vase scenes as carrying off dead Greek heroes like Sarpedon and Memnon. I NEVER thought I'd say this but maybe Dave Ramsey is on to something. Pay them off and having a large 401k balance doesn't really mean that much anymore. None of us can control the stock market, but we can control our own obligations. A person could go on, investing in mostly equities and hope to make 10% per year as advertised, or he can pay off what he has, and be comfortable only making 5-6% through moderate investing and have more than enough to live comfortably in those retirement years. And it also greatly changes the amount of money you need to live in the future.
And with little to no debt, it surely makes living life a lot easier. In other words, I KNOW if I pay off a certain loan at 6%, then that is guaranteed. One thing I've learned through this whole mess is, do what is guaranteed vs what MAY happen in the future. I know 10 years is not exactly a retirement horizon for most of us, but who's to say the next 10 will be much better. It is very deflating to have been investing in your 401k over the past 10 or so years only to see the balance worth less than what you have contributed. And end up with the same results-a high likelihood of poor performance. Individual investors go through the same motions. And, almost invariably, the process is repeated a few years later. A new round of due diligence is performed and a new manager is selected to replace the poorly performing one. The underperformance relative to passive benchmarks invariably leads decision-makers to fire the active manager. Unfortunately, on average, the active managers chosen based on outstanding track records have failed to live up to expectations. The selection process includes thorough due diligence, often with the assistance of a “gatekeeper”-a consulting firm such as Frank Russell or SEI. The majority of financial advisors, investment policy committees, and trustees of pension and retirements plans select investment managers based on historical performance. Are investors who search for outperformance via active management condemned to a similar fate? Then he must begin the whole process again. The task - push a boulder up a steep hill only to watch the boulder roll back down just before it reaches the top. He was forced to remain in the realm of the dead and complete the same task for eternity. Hades eventually intervened, severely punishing Sisyphus. He also betrayed the secrets of the gods and bound Thanatos, the god of death, so the deceased could not reach the underworld.
